Traditions Old and New: Creating Space for Joy

Dear You,

Holidays often bring pressure—pressure to do things “the way they’ve always been done,” or to feel a certain way. But your story may have changed, and your traditions can, too.

Creating space for new ways to celebrate doesn’t mean forgetting or letting go of what you’ve lost. It means honoring your present reality while planting seeds for joy in ways that feel authentic to you.

Whether that’s lighting a candle, sharing a memory, or starting a new ritual, you are allowed to make this season yours. You are allowed to bloom even in a different soil.

With warmth,
Alishia

I’m Alishia Anderson, a stillbirth survivor who turned my pain into purpose after losing my firstborn son, DJ. Through my book Still Here and future endeavors, I’ve made it my mission to create safe spaces for honest conversations about grief, faith, and hope—for baby loss families, grievers, and anyone navigating life transitions.

I’m a wife, angel mommy to DJ, and a rainbow and golden mama to my two living children. Originally from Michigan, I now call Southern California home and am a proud graduate of Florida A&M University and Kennesaw State University.
